The cocktail will be made with one of the world's best bourbons, produced by Woodford Brands, and served in a gold-plated cup with a silver straw. The mint will be brought in from Morocco, the ice will come from the Arctic Circle and the sugar from the South Pacific...

"People want a memory," said Wayne Rose, Woodford Reserve’s brand director. "This is something they can take home and share with friends."

The company sells about 90,000 standard mint juleps each year at the Derby.

Churchill Downs officials said the drink will help raise awareness about the needs of retired thoroughbreds.

"A concern has developed over time that these horses were finding their way to be sold for slaughter," track spokeswoman Julie Koenig said. "These horses are there making these memories special to us. It’s nice to find a way to give back to them."

The TRF applauds Churchill Downs for its continuing efforts on behalf of retired Thoroughbreds.

This is from Shane "According to old school bartenders, and in fact good bartenders, Manhattans, and Gin or Vodka martinis should never be shaken. Only drinks with fruit juice. According to Pat the old school bartender I work with, shaking said drinks does not allow the flavors to blend and give that smooth taste, it only makes them colder so you cannot taste the harshness, so in short it masks the flavor, much like the domestic beers do by keepin their beer ice cold. Q: What is Canadian whisky predominately made from?

A: Canadian whisky is made mostly from Corn, similar to Kentucky bourbon. Small amounts of barley and Rye are also added. By law, Canadian Whisky must be barrel ages for at least 3 years. While most Canadian whiskies are blends, some sigle malts have been poping up as of late. Candians have been making whisky for over 2oo years, but it really took off in the US during prohibition. This can be attributed to the mostly unguarded US-Canada border and the close proximity of Canadian Distilleries to the border that made sumggling relatively easy. Once prohibition was repealed Canadian whisky enjoyed "legal" popularity.

What is the definition of a cocktail anyway? Thanks, Tina A: Well in general meeting for "drinks" or "cocktails" is essentially the same. Both infer that you will be meeting over an alcoholic beverage. The words "drink" and "cocktail" do have different meaning. "Drink" is both a noun and a verb, it refers to all drinks, both with or without alcohol. "Cocktail", however, is a noun only and almost always refers to an alcoholic beverage, although some of my favorite cocktails are of the shrimp variety.|W|P|114412467196180485|W|P|Cocktail Question - Drinks vs. Cocktails?|W|P|drinkoftheweek@gmail.com4/01/2006 11:18:00 AM|W|P|the barkeep|W|P|A bunch of new recipes sent to us by our awesome readers.
